Does the 5 Series live up to its title – the business athlete?

The Business Athlete. That’s a strong title which can be translated in many ways, for me, it’s a title that evokes a sense of presence, stance and performance. The young executive: Mercedes-Benz CLA 200

I must confess, the CLA is not my favourite Mercedes-Benz. I always found it to be oddly shaped and awkward – it looks like the uglier younger brother of the CLS. A better looking seven seater: Honda’s BRV.

Why is it that people carriers are always terrible looking? If you have enough money you can get a drop… Continue reading If you don’t know what to do with your money, we have just the car for you.

Let’s be honest, for many a Porsche is on their bucket list of cars to own. As a result this has caused people to work hard in order to reach this goal. Reaching this goal usually takes time, unless you’re one of those IT geniuses who develops an app and sells it for millions after a year. If not and you go through the “usual” route to find monetary success, chances are you’ll be closer to middle aged when you can afford a new Porsche. The problem with that is that by the time you’re financially able to buy the car, you may have little things called children. Those things take up space, so your dream of owning a 911 can quickly be dashed. Do you then settle for a Cayenne? Possibly, but there is another option,  the Panamera.

When the Panamera first launched, people didn’t know what to do with themselves. Their facial expressions resembled those of people who had just eaten caviar for the first time, or Bovril. The majority of people thought the car was hideous. That being said, the cars sold very well around the world. Perhaps the looks grew on us? Personally we feel any large car will look terrible if it’s not specified correctly. A basic Panamera with small wheels is not a thing of beauty. Throw in some large wheels to fill the arches and the GTS package styling, then you’ve got something that looks great. Why are we telling you this though? Well the acquired taste is back, and it’s bigger and better. 30mm longer and 5mm wider to be exact.

Aesthetically the car has the same overall shape as before but it’s become sleeker. There is a kink in the rear that separates the boot from the overall body, making it seem less station wagon-like. The design lines are sharper and more defined and much more modern altogether. The headlights remind us of the the Porsche 918 Spyder, with the rear looking more like the current 911 range. Nine models are available ranging from the base Panamera to the the Panamera Turbo Executive. The entry point Panamera features a 3.0 litre Turbocharged V6 (243kW/450Nm), with the S  variant featuring a 2.9 litre Twin-Turbo V6 (324kW/550Nm). The big boy Turbo Executive will give you a 4.0 litre Twin Turbo engine producing 404kW and a whopping  770Nm. All models have an Executive variant which is 15cm longer, making it the Panamera you get chauffeured in should you feel inclined.

The new Panamera has one of the nicest interiors in its segment. With the correct options ticked, you can have a tech-fest in the car that combines class and sportiness. For instance there is a rear touch-screen that will control the 4-Zone climate control. You have the option of Bose or Burmester sound systems and you can have the sporty 911-esque seats too, as well as rear entertainment. As we mentioned, choosing the right exterior options on your Panamera is a must. Small wheels are no no, whereas the larger wheels are a big yes. The car also has a James Bond like rear wing that presents itself at speed. As it lifts, it has two pieces that become one, instantly making you look cooler than your non Panamera driving friends.

Like caviar, the Panamera will always be that love/hate car. Which is good because you don’t want anyone to feel “meh” about your vehicle, so those who don’t like it can jump. Porsche doesn’t really care we can imagine, as long as people are buying, they’re happy. This new Panamera is bound to be a bigger success than the previous model because it looks much better and it’s a Porsche after all. It’s a bucket list car remember?

Mercedes-Benz Straight Six Engines Are Back

In days gone by, Mercedes-Benz were the last word in refinement. Silky smooth straight sixes were the order of the day and while slightly less practical to package than a V6 motor of equivalent capacity, the inherent benefits of a straight six over a V6 made it worth the long bonnet. Because people hate long… Continue reading Mercedes-Benz Straight Six Engines Are Back

The Volvo evolution continues: S90 is here

I guess we didn’t really know what to expect from the new Volvo S90. On pictures, it looked a bit underwhelming, pretty but nothing to ride home about. Have you heard of the KIA Stinger?

KIA isn’t the first brand which comes to mind when discussing performance cars and that’s probably due to the fact that their most sporty offering up until mid-January was the Koup. It’s lovely, but you won’t be taking on any 440i’s or Golf GTI’s anytime soon – it’s just not that sort of car. Desirability,… Continue reading Have you heard of the KIA Stinger?

Gas Flowing Explained By Gerald From Camtech SA

Gas flowing, or porting of cylinder heads, is viewed by most laymen as being more mysterious than the US foreign policy. What does it actually mean? How is it done? Does it even work? The practical choice: Suzuki Ertiga

The practical choice: Suzuki Ertiga. Truth be told, there isn’t much in terms of appeal when it comes to people carriers. Opel MOKKA X: In tune with it’s siblings.

To be honest, I was not the biggest fan of the previous Opel Mokka. There was nothing particularly wrong with the car; it just felt much older than the current offering by Opel, which is very technology driven. Opel’s recent rebranding has completely changed the face of the brand. Cars which were beginning to become irrelevant… Continue reading Opel MOKKA X: In tune with it’s siblings.

Up until now, nearly every single one of my pieces on here has been a review or repost of some sort mostly cars, occasionally tech. Today, however, I write a desperate plea, a plea which I am 100% sure will go completely unnoticed by the group of people to whom it is directed…anyway!

Cult cars – people love them. The Jeep Wrangler, the Volkswagen Beetle, Fiat 500, Land Rover Defender, Mini Cooper, every single Saab, ever – the list goes on. Some of these vehicles disappeared into the abyss, only to make a retro and snazzy comeback 30 years later, except for the woeful New Beetle, while some just carried on and on and on with a bit of plastic being added to the dashboard here and there. They’re great, all of them, and each ‘cult car’ appeals to a different type of person for various reasons.

picsart_12-07-10-23

I am a huge fan of Mini’s, and I even have one. It’s black, and his name is Sebastian, and yes he may have been made by the German’s but anyone with half a motoring brain will realise that modern MINI’s are great. Well, sort of… The original resurrection of the MINI name by BMW in the early 2000’s was a shot in the dark for them, but couple German engineering with a cheeky brand identity and you’re sure to find success. Part of this success, however, is down to how great MINI’s are at many things – they’re cute, fun to drive and have loads of appeal.

The original new MINI, the R50/R53 was BMW’s first attempt at this, so they played it safe and borrowed bits from other manufacturers. It was nippy and little and rattled a lot but golly it was a sweet looking thing and reminded us of why we loved the original Mini so. Engines from Chrysler were probably not the best idea but huge success meant that the next model, the R56, would see more BMW and less…not BMW.

Horrendously unreliable, plasticy, expensive to maintain, expensive to buy and, not to mention, VERY unreliable were certainly not the reasons why the R56 was such a success, but nobody cared. And to this day, nobody cares and R56’s are still regarded amongst MINIacs as MINI’s hay day.

screenshot_20161207-101820

Francisco drives one too, it’s also black, and we both love how boosty and unassuming our cars are. They’re properly quick and just the right size to be thrown around, gripping in the corners just like MINI’s do., with a throaty growl and street-cred to match.

But now we arrive at the bit where I beg and plead. In my opinion, the new MINI Cooper S is too soft. The F56 is fast and reliable and finally has a BMW motor so it won’t break but it’s so big and too refined and to be honest, nowhere nearly as fun as an R56. There’s very little about the F56 that’s actually MINI and it’s a shame. As an everyday car, it’s great but having recently had the new Fiat 500 on test, I found myself lamenting in the fact that the new MINI is just too much. It’s too big, too expensive and too much (I never thought I’d ever say this) of a BMW.

screenshot_20161207-101939

The time has come for MINI to make the Rocketman Concept – a little runabout with a punchy turbo motor, cheeky looks and MINI handling, not 1 Series handling. The 500 with its grumbly two cylinder motor, diminutive proportions and the reasonable asking price is an incredibly sensible town car. If your name is Fiona and you run a florist. I certainly do not fit that description, though and look ridiculous in a Fiat 500, especially in the sort of blue your gran would describe as ‘soothing’.

So please, MINI, make us a manly and sensible city runabout?

Over recent years we have seen the Pickup or Bakkie market change, instead of the classic workhorse, Bakkies are used more for commercial and private sectors, simultaneously. Not only have they adapted into vehicles that look and feel great, they also have plenty of space for passengers, especially the double cab models. Peugeot 308 GT-Line Automatic

A few months back I was in the driving seat of the Peugeot 308 GT-Line Manual. My only issue with this car was that infotainment system is finicky.… Continue reading Peugeot 308 GT-Line Automatic

The rebirth of TVR.

Utter the words Griffith, Cerbera, Tuscan, Tamora, Typhon and Sagaris to any common or garden human and they’ll ask why you’re listing the ingredients of a McDonalds burger patty, but say even one of those within earshot of a petrolhead and they’ll pucker up like a nipple in Nepal. Founded in 1947 by a fellow… Continue reading The rebirth of TVR.

VW Polo Beats – Great sound for your travels

The VW Polo is probably one of the most popular cars on South Africa roads, especially with the young generation.  It’s a small hatch, its German – which makes it extremely reliable and its reasonably priced. A problem that I find with these little hatchbacks is that the audio quality is never great. The majority… Continue reading VW Polo Beats – Great sound for your travels

2016 Renault Megane

After 20 years, the fourth generation of Megane has arrived in South Africa. The 2016 Megane looks aggressive, I like it. Four models will be released, the first of these is the Dynamique model featuring a 1.6 litre 84 kW engine with a 5-speed manual box, no option for auto here. Moving up in the… Continue reading 2016 Renault Megane

At last BMW’s M2 driven.

“The most anticipated BMW this year” is the term thrown around for Bavaria’s latest introduction to the family. Smaller engine, more power, better fuel economy. A few months ago we drove the fiery Volvo S60 Polestar. Only 28 of these cars came to South Africa and were all accounted for, but… Continue reading New Volvo S60 Polestar coming, even more power!

Opel Corsa Sport: Baby boy racer.

We wish Opel’s reasoning as to why the Corsa Sport has wind-up windows in the rear was because of weight saving. That’s the only logical explanation we can think of, even if we know it’s not true. At least with that explanation, boy racers can use it as a bragging tool at meet-ups when the… Continue reading Opel Corsa Sport: Baby boy racer.

Citroen South Africa’s space aged plant.
